Spent the day preparing the studio for recording. Going to complete an art piece tonight for the wall. Recording will start Monday. Video updates and more photos will follow.
Monsters | Lyrics by Christian Johnstone
Orange against the black,
Situated in a place far from home
Take a step towards the stars,
a sardonic love we have.
Shadows have embarked,
creating monsters in the light
I stood below the moon
vacant virtues die tonight
Crows haunt me true,
What’s the worst they can do,
I’m on my own.
And Eyes shine green,
for my soul and everything I’ve become
The ground fades beneath
So I can tell myself, that I believe
Decided to use a childhood photograph to create some visuals to coincide with my music. I was too young to remember this photograph being taken actually I don’t recall anything about that house except playing with old bottles in the garden that me and my older brother excavated in the nearby woods. Filling them with mud and pebbles.
I have some big plans and a few things to tell use as for now. Both “Monsters” and “Callow” are free to download here.
Thanks for the support so far.
Christian.

Session I | Recording
I ran with a bag full of clothes and a guitar clinging tightly to my back, the tambourine adding percussion to my panicked motion. I watched the train speed away as I arrived at the station. Knowing I was meeting Brendan in 15minutes I retraced my footsteps back to home. Managing to get a lift of my Mother to Pitlochry train station, half way there, my phones lights up. Brendan was nearing the station.
Needless to say I arrived in time and met Brendan with a smile and instantly fell into a warming conversation of how we spent the previous day in the sun. We had a quick stop at the local store to get some fresh fruit and veg (Brendan being a devoted vegan). We got back in the car and as we drove outwards of the busy town centre along scenic farm roads towards his home. The sun was dancing between the trees.
We approached an old house tucked nicely in the valley. We went inside to be welcomed by three dogs who I had grown fond of during my short stay. Wonderfully fun animals. We made some coffee before sitting outside next to the pond to discuss the recording process.
We went inside with full intentions of kick starting the session. The room was warm with the beautiful sun, which I’ll keep mentioning due to it’s complete rarity in Scotland. The old windows were unforgivably stiff, which led Brendan to the most incredible idea. A hammer. Yes, I know you are probably agreeing with me on this one. Hammer vs Window is a pretty unfair fight. With the hammer in hand, he knocked on the wood, the window remained stiff, he tried again. I watched with confusion and anticipation. I can’t honestly do this moment justice. I’ll get to it, the hammer went right through the glass. A perfect hole with shards not littering outside. He turned to me, with the hammer still resting in the glass and we shared a look of despair. I smiled and could only say “Why weren’t you recording?”
The rest of the time we recorded, walked through woods, drank coffee, sat outside, drank coffee, recorded, sat outside, stargazed, discussed personal politics, inspired each other, recorded, sat outside, drank coffee etc. You get the idea. The two and a half days I spent in that country house was the most inspiring and influential days of my life so far. I truly feel resolved with a lot of inner angst.
We managed to complete two songs, I’ll be returning to soon to finish the ep.
